Safety Tips For The Holidays
The Hand & upper Extremity Center of San Antonio Wishes Everyone A Happy & Safe Holiday Season!
As the holiday season approaches, New Year's celebrations often include fireworks as an essential tradition. While these exhilarating moments are engrossing and thrilling, it can be easy to overlook the dangers associated with these explosive delights. This exhilarating tradition, however, comes with a critical consideration - the safety of our hands and fingers. As the very tools that light up the festivities, your hands and fingers are remarkably vulnerable. Understanding the risks and taking proper precautions can prevent injuries so you can enjoy your holiday. By recognizing the risks and adopting proper safety measures, we can ensure a holiday season that is both festive and free from firework-related injuries, allowing us to indulge in the celebrations with peace of mind.
10 Safety Tips for Fireworks
The manufacturer's instructions for safety should always be read and followed.
Always use fireworks outside and have water nearby in case of accidents.
You should never ignite an exploding device while holding it in your hands, even if it is designed to shoot in a single direction (it could malfunction).
Once the devices are lit, keep a distance from them.
"Duds" should never be picked up or re-lit; they may still be active and could explode in your hand or face.
Take precautions to protect your eyes and ears.
It is not a good idea to mix multiple fireworks together; many small fireworks can create greater destruction than a single large firework.
It is dangerous to place fireworks under other objects; the shrapnel can explode and cause facial and eye injuries.
Fireworks should never be thrown or pointed at each other.
Make sure minors are supervised at all times. Never leave minors unsupervised.
