What is ELbow Arthritis?

Elbow Arthritis, also known as Cubital Arthritis, is a condition characterized by inflammation and degeneration of the elbow joint. An elbow joint is formed by the meeting of three bones: the humerus (upper arm bone), the ulna (forearm bone), and the radius (both forearm bones). The bones are covered with cartilage, which cushions the joint and allows it to move smoothly. This condition affects that cartilage, causing pain, stiffness, swelling, and limited mobility.

What are the types of elbow arthritis?

Elbow arthritis comes in a variety of forms, each with its own symptoms and treatments. Generally, elbow arthritis is divided into three types:

  • Osteoarthritis: Associated with cartilage wear and tear, this is the most common type of arthritis. During cartilage breakdown, the bones may rub against each other, resulting in pain, swelling, and stiffness in the elbow.

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: It occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium, which lines the joints, leading to inflammation. The inflammation can cause deformity, pain, and swelling in the elbow joint, as well as damage to the cartilage and bones.

  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis: A fracture or dislocation of the elbow joint can cause this type of arthritis. Over time, cartilage and bones can be damaged, leading to arthritis symptoms. A poorly healed injury can also cause post-traumatic arthritis.

What are the common symptoms of elbow arthritis?

Depending on the type of arthritis you have, you may experience different symptoms. Elbow arthritis symptoms may include:

  • Stiffness: The ability to move the arm is restricted when the shoulder joint is immobilized or tight. Daily activities that involve bending or straightening the elbow can be challenging due to this stiffness.

  • Limited Range of Motion: Joint range of motion is often restricted by elbow arthritis. It may be difficult for individuals to fully extend or flex their elbows, resulting in limited movement.

Inflammation & Swelling: Swelling, inflammation, and/or tenderness in the elbow joint. Inflammation and increased blood flow can make the joint feel warm to the touch.

  • Joint Pain: A dull or sharp pain in the elbow joint or surrounding areas that may worsen with movement or pressure on the joint. It can also radiate to the forearm or hand in some cases.

  • Weakness: As arthritis progresses, weakness in the elbow joint muscles may develop. This weakness can result from pain and stiffness, which limit physical activities.

What are my treatment options f0r elbow arthritis?

The goal of elbow arthritis treatment is to reduce pain, increase joint function, and prevent further damage. There are several possibilities here, including:

NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS

  • Corticosteroid injections

  • Pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medications.

Physical Therapy to improve elbow flexibility, strength, and function.

  • Range of motion exercises and stretches.

  • Bracing/ Splinting

  • Ice application.

  • Joint protection techniques.

SURGICAL TREATMENTS

  • Arthroscopic Debridement

  • Osteotomy

  • Joint Replacement (Arthroplasty)

Symptom severity, functional limitations, underlying health conditions, and patient preferences should all be taken into consideration when treating elbow arthritis. If you are experiencing any pain, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an orthopedic surgeon, in order to develop a customized treatment plan.
